Since joining Young Thug’s YSL label in 2016, Georgia rapper Gunna has rapidly established himself as one of the greatest rappers of his generation. His five Billboard 200 chart-topping solo albums and platinum collaborations with Lil Baby like “Sold Out Dates” have cemented him into a household name.
Despite his success, he still feels connected to his roots in Atlanta. This can be heard through songs like “Top Off,” from his Drip Season 3 mixtape.
1. Drip or Drown 2
Gunna is a rapper from Georgia who has gained a significant fan base through his mixtapes and collaborations with Young Thug. He’s quickly become one of the hottest names in the game due to his impressive work ethic and inventive collaborations.
Gunna, 25, has released two studio albums since his debut tape Hard Body in 2013, and it’s easy to see why: His songs are soothing, thoughtful and an insightful look into life in Atlanta. Additionally, he is an accomplished musician and songwriter whose music has been featured in multiple soundtracks and games.
On Drip or Drown 2, Gunna continues to display his mastery of rapping over chill beats that are both gentle and powerful. The production is mellow, yet also heavy-hitting and powerful at the same time.
Although the album doesn’t have as many hits as Drip Season 3 or Drip Harder, it still includes some excellent songs. One standout track on the record is “Derek Fisher,” featuring Lil Baby and Playboi Carti.
Another standout song on the album is “3 Headed Snake,” featuring Young Thug. This track serves as a testament to how these artists can collaborate and craft an excellent track.
Gunna and Thug collaborated on the lyrics to create an infectious sung verse. It became a huge hit on the US Rhythmic Airplay chart and peaked at number 36 on Billboard Hot 100.
Drip or Drown 2 is Gunna’s follow-up to 2017 EP, featuring production from Wheezy and Turbo as well as appearances by Lil Baby and Young Thug. Certified gold by RIAA, the album is expected to do well in sales.
Gunna’s album includes songs with a range of genres, but it’s evident he feels most at home in trap and mumble rap scenes. However, there lacks innovation and excitement within the music; this could be seen as an issue, yet still serves as an important release for him; hopefully his next one will be even better!
2. Pushin P
Hip-hop fans likely know who Gunna is. A Georgia native who was taken under Young Thug’s wing and formed his own unique sound, Gunna has quickly made waves on the charts, earning multiple top ten hits and platinum songs that have cemented him as a household name in hip-hop.
He began his career with a mixtape called Hard Body in 2013 and followed it up with Drip Season three years later. It quickly went viral, leading to collaborations with Lil Baby for “Sold Out Dates,” off their joint effort Drip Harder.
He’s also part of the Internet Money hip-hop collective and record label, where he has collaborated with numerous artists. His mumble styled vocals have become increasingly popular on top-charting singles by Chris Brown and Travis Scott.
In 2022, he joined forces with Future and Young Thug for the track “Pushin P,” which explores wealth-building strategies as well as maintaining stable relationships in order to keep one’s life afloat. This song quickly went viral, showing off one of his many creative strategies for standing out from others.
It is important to remember that while “pushin p” may signify living a high lifestyle and displaying success through expensive possessions and other luxuries, it does not imply you should lie to people or make up stories about your life. Instead, Gunna explained, the term is used as a positive slang expression which implies acting with integrity and style while flaunting luxury possessions and living a luxurious lifestyle.
In May 2022, Gunna was arrested alongside Young Thug and other members of YSL for gang-related charges. He was charged with 56 counts of Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) charges and sentenced to five years in prison; however, in December 2022 he was released after pleading guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge and doing 350 hours of community service.
3. So Far Ahead
Since his debut mixtape Drip Season dropped in 2016, Gunna has quickly earned himself a place of honor among hip hop music lovers. He’s earned critical acclaim and amassed an enormous fan base, making him one of the highest-selling artists ever. Now, Gunna is getting ready to release his fourth studio album.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting his new work for some time, and now the rap star has finally delivered it. Titled Drip Season 4, the album boasts 19 tracks plus one bonus track with appearances from Drake, Young Thug, Future, Chloe Bailey, 21 Savage, Kodak Black and more.
On January 11th, The Weeknd’s album Dawn FM made history by debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart – barely beating out fellow debutante The Weeknd’s release, Rogue Wave. Additionally, with just 150,000 album-equivalent units sold in only three weeks, this achievement is truly remarkable.
DS4Ever, Gunna’s follow-up to 2020’s WUNNA, sees him returning to the same approach that made his earlier Drip Season mixtapes so successful. However, this time around he emphasizes more energetic rhythms with whirring beeps and whopping 808s instead of the expansive “Skybox” soundscapes that defined his earlier works.
Although it boasts plenty of catchy tunes, the new album lacks polish in comparison to its predecessors. The production can be overly repetitive and the songwriting lacks originality; often falling into tired cliches.
One standout track, however, is “Pushin P,” featuring Gunna and Young Thug rapping about their desire for money over Thugger’s signature “P” beat. Together they deliver some of the year’s most entertaining anthems.
Gunna fans will love So Far Ahead, but it is suitable for anyone wanting a fun and energetic rap album. With its heavy snare beat and catchy melodies, So Far Ahead makes it easy to get down.
The song is accompanied by some humorous music videos, showcasing Georgia rapper’s Southern charm. He’s a personable guy who enjoys meeting his fans and has an uncanny ability to drop funny lines at exactly the right moment.
4. Too Easy
When I first heard “Too Easy” by Gunna and Wheezy, it had me completely mesmerized. Produced by YSL star Wheezy, the song quickly became one of Gunna’s most popular singles to date. In addition to this hit single, Gunna also has several other noteworthy releases under his belt such as Drip or Drown EP.
Though “Too Easy” is a relatively short song, it still managed to earn me my top spot on the all-time favorite Gunna tracks chart. This achievement is even more remarkable considering Gunna had already achieved success with his massive hit “Baby Birkin” that year.
Gunna’s song has become one of many that have propelled her into the top echelons of hip-hop music. Though not the first new track we’ve heard from him, it certainly proved to be one of his most popular and well-received. With some tour dates scheduled for this fall, don’t miss your chance to witness this experienced veteran in person!
